The 2024 edition of Nigeria’s premier multi-sport event, the National Sports Festival, held in Ogun State, marked a significant turning point in the country’s sporting history. Branded as OGUN 2024 / Gateway Games 2024 – A Celebration Beyond Sports, the festival united athletes from all 36 states of Nigeria in a showcase of talent, competition, and national pride.

For the first time ever, esports was featured as a demonstration sport, signaling a new era for digital competition in Nigeria. Over two action-packed days, gamers proudly represented their states in thrilling matchups of EAFC 24 and Street Fighter 6, bringing the same energy and competitiveness seen in traditional sports arenas.

This groundbreaking inclusion follows the official recognition of esports as a sport by the National Sports Council of Nigeria, which also paved the way for the establishment of a National Esports Federation. This development reflects the growing importance of digital sports globally and Nigeria’s commitment to staying at the forefront of emerging sporting trends.

The esports segment of the festival was officially kicked off by Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the National Sports Commission, alongside Hon. Bukola Olopade, Director General of the Commission. Their presence signaled strong institutional support for the integration of esports into Nigeria’s national sports agenda.

The debut of esports at the National Sports Festival not only validates the hard work of advocates within the gaming community but also opens new pathways for youth engagement, talent development, and digital innovation in sports. As the industry continues to evolve, Nigeria is poised to become a leading voice in Africa’s esports movement.

The success of this demonstration event may well pave the way for esports to become a full medal event in future editions of the festival — a move that would further legitimize the discipline and inspire a new generation of Nigerian gamers.
